Located
just south of Charlotte's 1-485 Beltway is Ballantyne, the largest
development of it's kind in Charlotte's history. Commonly referred
to, as the "Ballantyne Area" or "New South Charlotte" this
area is a short commute to uptown Charlotte, which is only 14 miles
away. Several major transportation corridors and multiple interchanges
along the beltway serve the Ballantyne area. These provide for easy
access to downtown, the airport, major business centers and the South
Park area.
At the heart of the Ballantyne area is the 2,000-acre Ballantyne master planned community, which consists of commercial, retail, residential, recreational, and resort areas. It's crossroads at Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Johnston Road is the site of four monuments, dedicated by the developer to the city. Each monument towering more than 30 feet, tell of the history of the Charlotte area and the people who built it. The crown jewel of the area is the Ballantyne Resort which has been awarded the prestigious "Preferred Hotel and Resort" designation.
Located at the corner of Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Johnston Road, the seven story hotel features 216 rooms, 18 suites and 2 Presidential Suites. Guests can enjoy fine dining in a casual atmosphere in the Grill Room or enjoy a beverage in either the Lobby or Clubhouse Bar while enjoying a view of the golf course from the veranda. Also available to guests are the exercise area with aerobic and fitness equipment, the indoor grotto pool. Two endless lap pools, a whirlpool and sauna.
The hotel provides 20,000 square feet of meeting
space on two levels with 18 meeting rooms and a 6,500 square foot "Grand Ballroom".
There is also additional meeting space available on the second floor
of the clubhouse and at the Lodge.
Inside the hotel is the 16,000 square foot Spa at Ballantyne that is also open to the public. It offers pool, massage, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures, full service salon and a spa boutique.
The
18 hole Ballantyne Resort Golf Course was recognized by North Carolina
Magazine in 1998 as the "Best New Course" which placed
it in the same league as Pinehurst #8 at the Pinehurst Resort and
Country Club. The course, practice facilities and the large well
stocked Pro Shop are open to the public.
Located between the first and eighteenth fairways is the world famous Dana Rader Golf School. Dana Rader is ranked as one of the top 50 golf instructors in the United States and was the LPGA Teacher of the Year in 1990. Her staff includes several teachers with impressive playing and teaching resumes.
Across the fairway from the hotel are the tennis courts and the Lodge at Ballantyne. This new addition to the resort is reminiscent of a rustic hunting lodge. It offers a perfect setting for corporate retreats, wedding receptions and even family reunions.
Shopping
The Ballantyne area offers a wide range of shopping options including Ballantyne Town Center East, StoneCrest at Piper Glen, the Arboretum, the Promenade on Providence, and the Terraces at Ballantyne, an upscale shopping venue which is under development.
Minutes away are Carolina Place Mall with 140 stores including 5 department stores and the adjoining Carolina Place Parkway row of furniture stores, big box retailers and outlet clubs including Sam's and BJ's Warehouse.
Across from Carolina Place mall is the Centrum Center with even more stores including Office Max, PetSmart, SteinMart, TJ Maxx, K-Mart, Home Depot and Dick's Sporting Goods.
Located a short 20 minutes away from Ballantyne is SouthPark Mall, Charlotte's most upscale shopping destination. Today, it is being renovated and expanded to accommodate a 5th department store, Nostrums along with several other upscale designer shops.
Additional shopping venues near SouthPark include Specialty Shops on the Park, Morrocroft Village and Phillips Place.
Dining
There are a wide variety of family friendly dining opportunities,
ranging from popular fast food establishments to some of the city's
most notable upscale restaurants. Some local favorites are the Grill
Room in the Ballantyne Resort Hotel, Adam's with it's piano bar,
Dean & DeLuca, Joey D's, Firebirds, Phil & Tony's, Mickey & Mooches, Providence Bistro, the Fox & Hound,
Harpers, PF Changs and the Palm.
Recreation
The Ballantyne-South Charlotte area is home to several fine golf
courses both daily fee and private. Additional recreation can be
found throughout the area with public parks, the Ballantyne YMCA
fitness center and 100-acre YMCA-County recreational facility, which
feature a "Water Park".
Close by are Paramount's Carowinds amusement Park, the Anne Springs Close Greenway with 1,200 acres and 30 miles of walking trails and for boating and fishing nearby Lake Wylie.

Excellent Local Schools
There are a number of fine public Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools serving the area along with a number of private schools for both primary and secondary students. Several new schools are planned in response to the rapid growth of the area.
Health Care
The area is serviced by two hospitals, which are only minutes away off I-485. Presbyterian South is located on Highway 51 in Matthews. Carolina Medical Center/Mercy South is located on Highway 51 in nearby Pineville.

Ballantyne Corporate Park
The 525-acre Ballantyne Corporate Park offers over five-million square feet of prime office space along with restaurants, hotels, banking and other convenient amenities. The park is home to businesses like ESPN, Lending Tree, Equitable National Service Center, Fireman's Fund Insurance, Pinkerton, SFX and many others. Presently located in the office park are two banks, a StayBridge Suites, the Marriott Courtyard and Adam's restaurant.
Toringdon
Located across 1-485 from Ballantyne along Johnston Road is Toringdon, which is a 40 acre mixed-use development. It will have eight office buildings offering 675,000-square feet plus a residential and retail component with up to 800 multifamily units and over 100,000-square feet set aside for retail.
